About
Alicia Zimmerman testified for the Commonwealth on Day 6 about toxicology screening of samples from Callan, Cora and Dawson Clancy. A forensic scientist in the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab's Toxicology Unit, she reported no substances detected in Callan's hospital blood and urine samples or in Cora's and Dawson's postmortem heart blood.
Under questioning by Shanan Buckingham, Zimmerman explained that she reviewed the data and issued reports reflecting the negative screening results. Negative screens received no further testing; positive screens would prompt confirmatory or quantitative analysis, depending on the test. Stipulations read to the jury identified her as the assigned analyst and described other laboratory staff's screening, analysis and review work.
Zimmerman also explained that hospital samples collected before death can sometimes help assess substances present before death and before hospital-administered drugs. She said the medical examiner typically submits those samples when available. The defense asked no questions.
