Barbara Olson testified about Cora and Dawson Clancy's autopsies and causes of death on Day 12. She qualified her strangulation timing estimates when the prosecutor challenged her answer about recovery after unconsciousness; defense counsel declined cross-examination.
Barbara Olson

Forensic pathologist and medical examiner at the Cape Cod office of the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
About
Barbara Olson testified for the Commonwealth on Day 12 about her January 25 autopsies of Cora and Dawson Clancy. A medical examiner at the Cape Cod office of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, she described horizontal ligature furrows and petechial hemorrhages in both children. She identified Cora's cause of death as asphyxia by strangulation and Dawson's as asphyxia. She could not determine the precise age or cause of Cora's bruises, and she offered more than one possible explanation for Dawson's more prominent facial hemorrhages.
Olson explained how neck compression deprives the brain of oxygen and distinguished unconsciousness from immediate death. She gave a general estimate of 10 to 30 seconds to unconsciousness with complete oxygen deprivation, while emphasizing case-specific variables. Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague challenged her answer about recovery after unconsciousness and sought impeachment through an alleged prior inconsistent statement. Several questions drew sustained objections. Olson rejected a fixed 30-second formulation, and the alleged inconsistency was not established during the exchange.
Olson also authenticated autopsy photographs. The court admitted the displayed photograph sets as Exhibits 228 and 229 over defense objection. Kevin Reddington declined cross-examination.
